Comparing two products on a supermarket shelf is harder than it looks: one gives its values per 30-gram portion, the other per 100 grams; one says “no added sugar” but is sweetened with fruit concentrate. This tool levels the comparison by converting the values you enter from the two labels to the same basis. Why can a portion-based declaration be misleading?
If the manufacturer defines the portion as small, the numbers in the table look small too; yet real consumption is often larger than the declared portion. Converting to a common basis removes that effect.
Should I choose 100 g or 100 ml?
100 g is used for solid products and 100 ml for drinks. A mixed comparison — a drink against a snack, say — would not be meaningful in any case, so the tool expects you to compare products of the same kind.
What should I look for in the sugar row?
The “sugars” figure on a label covers both natural and added sugar; the lactose in plain yoghurt, for example, appears here too. Reading the sugar column together with the ingredients list therefore gives a more accurate picture.
Are salt and sodium the same thing?
They are not; salt is roughly 2.5 times sodium. Labels in Türkiye generally declare salt; if you come across a label giving sodium instead, you can convert it roughly to salt by multiplying the value by 2.5.
Method and formula
You enter the energy, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugar, protein and salt values declared on the products’ labels, together with the quantity the label gives them for. The tool scales all values to a common basis — 100 g for solid products and 100 ml for drinks — and shows them side by side. The calculation is no more than a simple proportion; the real work is removing the illusion created by different portion declarations.
How to read the result
In a table converted to a common basis, the differences appear at their true size: a product that looks innocent per portion can turn out markedly sweeter per 100 grams. Read the comparison according to your own priority; for someone watching their salt intake the salt column stands out, for someone watching energy balance the calorie column does. Deciding “good product / bad product” from a single column is usually misleading.
Limits
- The comparison depends on the accuracy of the values declared on the label; declarations carry legal tolerance margins.
- The ingredients list (additives, type of sweetener) is not part of the comparison; two similar tables can belong to very different ingredients lists.
- The 100 g basis can mislead for concentrated products; the values of a product actually eaten in small amounts can look exaggerated.
- The tool does not compare price, pack weight or packaging.
Safety boundary
If you have a food allergy or intolerance, this tool is not sufficient; allergen information appears in the ingredients list rather than the nutrition table, and must be confirmed from the packaging itself for every product.
