The Running Pace Calculator works out your pace per kilometre from the time and distance you ran, and it also converts between a target pace and a finishing time.

Runners usually talk about progress in terms of pace: saying “I ran at six minutes” describes the time taken per kilometre. This tool handles the three-way conversion between time, distance and pace for you: it works out the pace of a run, shows the pace a target time would require, or tells you how long a distance would take at a given pace. That lets you base your training on numbers rather than on impressions.

Are pace and speed the same thing?

They are two presentations of the same information: pace is the time taken per kilometre (min/km), while speed is the distance covered in an hour (km/h). A pace of 6:00 min/km corresponds to a speed of 10 km/h. Runners tend to prefer pace, because that is the figure their watches show.

How fast should an easy run be?

It varies from person to person, and the practical measure is not a number but the talk test: on an easy run you should have enough breath to speak in sentences. For most runners that is noticeably slower than race pace, and it is meant to be.

Can my 10 km time be worked out from my 5 km pace?

Not by direct proportion; pace naturally drops as the distance grows. Race prediction formulas try to model that drop, but they fall outside the scope of this tool. A cautious approach is to plan your 10 km pace somewhat slower than your 5 km pace.

Is treadmill pace the same as pace outdoors?

A treadmill removes wind resistance, so the same pace feels slightly easier on one; many runners add a small incline to offset the difference. Keeping your comparisons within the same setting is more consistent.

Method and formula

The basic calculation is a plain division: pace = total time ÷ distance, with the result given in minutes per kilometre. Running 5 km in 30 minutes, for example, comes to 30 ÷ 5 = 6:00 min/km. The tool uses the same relationship in reverse as well: enter a target time and it returns the pace required; enter a pace and it returns an estimated finishing time. It also handles the minute-and-second conversions that are easy to get wrong, such as confusing 6.5 minutes with 6:30.

How to read the result

Pace only means something alongside the context of the run: the same person’s easy-run pace and race pace can be minutes apart, and that is not an inconsistency but a sign of a healthy training structure. Gradient, weather and surface shift your pace from day to day. When you follow your own progress, comparing like with like — easy runs on flat ground against each other, races against each other — gives the truest reading.

Limits

  • The calculation depends on the accuracy of the distance measurement; GPS readings from watches and phones can be a few per cent out.
  • An average pace hides the variation within a run; the first and last kilometres may be very different.
  • Gradient, temperature and wind are not taken into account, so paces from different conditions cannot be compared directly.
  • Predicting your performance at one distance from your pace at another requires separate assumptions, and this tool does not make that prediction.

Safety boundary

Set your target pace from your current fitness; aiming at somebody else’s pace raises the risk of overreaching and injury. If you notice symptoms such as chest pain or dizziness while running, stop and seek medical help if you need it. If you are just starting out, a walk-run planner may be a more suitable place to begin.
