Have you ever read a personality description and thought “that is exactly me”? This experiment shows how that feeling can be produced. You are given a series of personality statements and asked to rate how well each one describes you; at the end of the experiment a small surprise is waiting. The aim is not to declare anyone “fooled”: the Barnum effect is a tendency of the mind that works in all of us regardless of intelligence, and the most lasting way to recognise it is to see it in yourself.

Why is the effect called Barnum?

The name was popularised by the psychologist Paul Meehl, alluding to the showman P. T. Barnum, famous for the approach of “something for everyone”; in the literature the name Forer effect is also used, after the author of the experiment.

Is falling for this effect a sign of gullibility?

No; the effect is largely independent of education and intelligence. Forer’s subjects were university students, and in the decades that followed the experiment was repeated many times with different groups and similar results. Protection comes not from intelligence but from knowing the mechanism.

Does this experiment refute astrology?

On its own, no; what it shows is narrower but important — that general statements can feel personal. In other words, the feeling that “this reading fits me” is not by itself evidence that the reading was accurate. Where do we come across the Barnum effect?

Across a wide field, from horoscopes to palmistry, from social-media personality quizzes to some marketing copy and cold-reading techniques. Any “just for you” description built out of positive, general statements is ground on which this effect can work.

Method and formula

The experiment follows the logic of the famous classroom study the psychologist Bertram Forer carried out with his students in 1948 and published in 1949. The tool shows you statements that look like a personality description, and you give each one a score for how well it fits you. When the rating is over, the explanation arrives: the statements are not specific to you; they are generic sentences chosen to cover both ends at once (“although you appear outgoing, there is a reserved side to you”) and to let almost anyone find something of themselves in them. The result screen reads your score alongside the high averages such statements typically receive; Forer’s students, too, gave the shared text they believed had been written for them an average of 4.26 out of 5.

How to read the result

If you gave high scores, you have not been caught out; as the experiment shows, most people do. The strength of the effect draws on several sources: the positive tone of the statements, the belief that they were prepared specially for us, and our mind’s habit of bringing forward the parts that fit while quietly passing over the ones that do not. The everyday value of this awareness is being able to ask “who would this statement not fit?” whenever you meet a personality description — a horoscope, an internet quiz or a sales pitch alike. The sibling of this experiment, the blind matching experiment, takes that question one step further.

Limits

  • This is an educational experiment; it does not carry the controlled conditions of a scientific study.
  • The effect is weaker in those who already know how the experiment works; the result is then not representative.
  • Rating is subjective and is affected by your mood on the day.
  • The experiment does not devalue personality assessment as a whole; scales whose scientific validity has been tested are a separate category.
