What are sets and reps?
“3 sets of 10” is the most basic sentence in strength training, yet what those numbers mean and why they were chosen usually goes unexplained. Sets and reps are the units of measurement in training, and learning the logic makes programmes readable.
Short answer
A rep is one full performance of a movement; a set is a group of reps done without a break. The notation “3 × 10” means three separate blocks of 10 reps with rest in between. The commonly used approximate ranges say that low reps (1–6) emphasise strength, moderate reps (6–12) muscle growth and high reps (12 and above) endurance; but those boundaries are not sharp.
Definitions: rep, set and notation
A rep (repetition) is one complete performance of a movement through its full range: in a squat, going down and standing back up is one rep. A set is the block formed by reps done one after another without a break. Programmes write this as “3 × 10”: three sets of 10 reps, with rest in between. What rep ranges tell you
The number of reps in a set is inversely related to the weight used: few reps means a heavy load, many reps a light one. The commonly used approximate framework is this: 1–6 reps with heavy loads emphasises maximal strength, 6–12 reps muscle growth, and 12 and above muscular endurance. Current research, however, shows those boundaries are not sharp: as long as the effort is demanding enough, a wide span of rep ranges can produce muscle growth. For beginners the 8–12 range is a practical start; it allows technique to be learned and does not require very heavy loads.
How many sets should you do?
Two or three working sets per exercise is a sufficient and widely used framework to start with; even a single set brings clear benefit over none. What matters more than the number of sets is their quality: the sets that count are those done with good technique and an effort that leaves 2–3 reps in reserve; that effort setting is explained in the RPE and RIR guide. Total set numbers can be raised gradually over time; but that increase, like the other variables, should come one at a time and in small steps.
Rest between sets
Rest is the invisible part of a set: too little lowers the quality of the next set, while needlessly long rest drags the session out. The practical framework is this: 2–3 minutes for heavy compound movements (squats, presses), 60–90 seconds for moderately demanding exercises and 45–60 seconds for light isolation work are common recommendations. The test is simple: you should have recovered enough to do the next set at a similar quality. A phone stopwatch is enough to time it; leaving rest to feel usually makes it either far too short or far too long.
The time inside a rep: tempo and control
The same “10 reps” can be a completely different piece of work depending on the speed at which it is done, so alongside set and rep numbers there is a tempo dimension. A rep has two main phases: the one in which the load is lifted and the one in which it is lowered. The part beginners most often neglect is the lowering; letting the weight drop with gravity means throwing away half the rep, because the muscle works on the way down too and the contribution of that phase is well documented. The practical rule is not an elaborate tempo scheme: lifting in a controlled, deliberate way and spreading the lowering over roughly two to three seconds so that you command the weight is enough. Controlled tempo is also an honest referee; a load that can be swung up often cannot be lifted at a controlled tempo, which shows that the resistance is in fact too heavy. Even when the numbers stay the same, improving the tempo is progress in its own right.
Turning the numbers into a programme
An example reading: the line “Squat 3 × 8–12, 2 minutes rest” says to choose a weight you can do 8–12 reps with, work three sets and rest 2 minutes between them. Once you comfortably pass 12 reps, add one increment of weight; the reps drop back to 8 and the cycle starts again. This cycle is the simplest application of progressive overload. If sharp pain appears during a set, stop before finishing it; if the pain recurs, speak to a healthcare professional rather than forcing the movement. The numbers are a tool; the aim is to do a little more, safely, from one week to the next.
Frequently asked questions
Do you use the same sets and reps for every exercise?
Not necessarily; programmes usually give large movements fewer reps and longer rest, and smaller movements more reps and shorter rest. At the start, keeping every exercise in the 8–12 range is sensible for simplicity.
Should I train to failure on every set?
No; for beginners, finishing sets with 2–3 reps in reserve is both safe and sufficient. Going to complete failure makes recovery harder and raises the risk of technical error.
If I cannot complete 10 reps, is the set wasted?
No; record the number of reps you managed. If you are consistently below the target, the weight is too heavy and dropping one increment is the right step.
When do methods such as supersets and drop sets come in?
These are tools for saving time or for advanced overload; it is enough to consider them months after the basic set and rep structure has settled. Straight sets are the most productive route at the start.
