Why do you give a range rather than a single number?
Because estimating equations carry a natural margin of error. A single number creates an impression of precision; a range reflects reality more honestly and saves you from worrying about small daily fluctuations.
How much of a change does a 10–15 per cent deficit correspond to?
It varies from person to person, but in most adults it comes to a few hundred calories a day. A gradual change on that scale is regarded as a more sustainable approach than severe restriction.
Can it tell me how long it will take to reach my goal?
No. The body’s response to a change in energy varies between people and over time; the tool cannot promise a timetable, only give you a sense of scale.
Will I get results faster if I stay below the range?
Marked restrictions increase the risk of muscle loss, nutritional deficiency and not being able to keep going. This is why the tool shows measured scenarios only; if you have a more ambitious goal, you need to plan it alongside a professional.
Method and formula
First the basal metabolic rate is found with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then it is multiplied by an activity factor (1.2–1.9) to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE); we describe these two steps in detail on the BMR and TDEE pages. The daily need is presented as a range covering ten per cent below and above that estimate. Goal scenarios work on a percentage basis rather than imposing a fixed calorie figure: for information, the tool shows what a controlled energy deficit of around 10–15 per cent means for those thinking about losing weight, and what a controlled surplus of a similar proportion means for those thinking about gaining.
How to read the result
Staying inside the range does not mean “right”, and going outside it does not mean “wrong”; the range only shows the region in which the estimate is reliable. The percentages in the goal scenarios are not prescriptions either, but examples showing how large a measured change is. Your body’s real response is shown by the trend across weeks; the data from a single day can be misleading.
Limits
- The range rests on an equation-based estimate; your real need may also fall outside it.
- The subjectivity involved in choosing an activity level directly affects the result.
- The tool says nothing about food quality, meal patterns or feelings of fullness; it deals with energy only.
- Under prolonged energy restriction, the body’s adaptive responses can invalidate the estimate.
- The results are meaningful for adults; the needs of children and adolescents are not calculated in this way.
