How to assess training volume
Volume is one of the most useful ways of describing how much work you are actually doing in training. Tracking it shows you both whether you are doing enough and whether you are pushing past what you can recover from.

What volume is and how to count it
At its simplest, volume is the total work done in training. A detailed calculation can multiply sets × reps × weight, but the more useful day-to-day measure is the number of sets per muscle group per week. What counts here are hard sets: not warm-up sets, but working sets that genuinely demand effort towards the end of the reps. Volume is one of the levers of progressive overload, and like the others it should be raised gradually: if you have been recovering comfortably at your current volume for a few weeks, adding 1–2 sets a week for a muscle group is a sensible step. Same volume, different spread: the role of frequency
Weekly volume is judged not only by its total but by how it is distributed. Say you allocate 12 sets a week to a muscle group: you could do all 12 in one session, or split them 6+6 across two. The general finding in research is that results are similar when total volume is equal; in practice, though, the split has clear advantages. The last part of a pile of sets in a single session is done with accumulated fatigue and at lower quality; split across two days, every set is fresher and technique holds up. Long single sessions also make both scheduling and motivation harder. This is exactly the pattern beginners fall into naturally with full-body programmes: each muscle group trained two or three times a week with a moderate number of sets. A simple way to keep track
Tracking volume does not need elaborate spreadsheets; writing the sets, reps and resistance for each exercise in a notebook or a note on your phone is enough. Adding up working sets by muscle group at the end of the week takes a couple of minutes. That record makes visible which areas are getting too little and which too much, and it turns “slightly better than last week” into something measurable.
