How to get your monitor height right
A few centimetres in the position of the screen you look at all day decide how your neck and shoulders feel by the evening. Assessing monitor height is a five-minute job, and more often than not all it takes is a few books.
Short answer
The general rule: sitting upright and comfortably, the top edge of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away, so that your line of sight slopes gently downwards. A laptop cannot meet that rule on its own; a riser plus an external keyboard and mouse is the most practical solution.
Why do a few centimetres matter so much?
The head is heavier than people assume, and the neck muscles carry it all day. If the screen is too low the head leans constantly forward and the load on the neck rises markedly; if it is too high the chin lifts, the back of the neck shortens and the eyes become more prone to drying. In both cases, minutes that look harmless individually accumulate over hours into tension, pain and fatigue.
The right height balances that load: head above the spine, chin slightly tucked, gaze sloping gently downwards. The aim is not a perfect pose but a natural posture you can hold effortlessly for a long time.
A quick check: the 30-second test
Sit in your chair as you normally would, close your eyes, bring your head into a relaxed upright position, then open your eyes. Where on the screen does your gaze fall? Ideally it should land on the upper third of the screen; if it falls clearly above the top edge or into the lower half, the height needs adjusting.
The second check is distance: the screen should be about an arm's length away (roughly 50–70 centimetres); if you lean forward to read the text, either the screen should come closer or the text size should be increased. The third check is position: the screen should sit directly in front of you; working while turned slightly to one side all day creates one-sided load on the neck and back.
It is worth repeating the test at a different time of day: posture that starts upright in the morning tends to slump in the afternoon, and your viewing angle changes even though the screen has not moved. A small adjustment made for your tired-hours posture eases the longest part of the day.
Raising solutions: from simple to fully equipped
If the screen sits too low, the solutions run from cheap to expensive: sturdy books or boxes, monitor riser stands, and monitor arms that adjust height and tilt freely. For most home users a few books solve the problem; what matters is that the base is solid and stable.
If the screen is too high (on top of a tall cabinet, say, or on a wall) bringing it down is just as important. If the monitor's own stand offers height adjustment, try that first; many people have never discovered that the adjustment exists. After adjusting, repeat the 30-second test and confirm the result.
Adjust the tilt along with the height: tipping the top edge of the screen slightly back, by roughly 10–20 degrees, squares the screen surface to your line of sight and reduces reflections. If a window or lamp is reflecting on the screen, the problem may be the angle rather than the height; a small correction to the tilt clears most glare.
The laptop user's dilemma
On a laptop the screen and the keyboard are attached to each other, so the two cannot be in the right position at the same time: if the screen rises to eye level the hands are left in the air, and if the keyboard is comfortable the screen sits low and the head drops forward. That is the main reason long laptop sessions are associated with back and neck fatigue.
The solution is to separate the pair: raise the laptop to eye level with a riser (or books) and use an external keyboard and mouse. That small investment brings a laptop close to desktop comfort at a desk. Short spells on the sofa are not a problem; the problem is hours a day of working at a low screen.
Height alone is not enough
Monitor height is one part of your seating arrangement; it works together with the chair and the desk. The rough order is this: adjust the chair first (feet on the floor, elbows at roughly a right angle at the desk), then position the screen to suit that seating. Frequently asked questions
I wear glasses; does the rule change for me?
With progressive lenses the screen is generally viewed through the lower part of the lens, so positioning the screen a little lower prevents the neck tipping back. Test the position that suits your own lenses using the natural head position from which you look comfortably; consult your optician or eye doctor if needed.
I use two monitors; where should each one go?
If you use them equally, the line where the two screens meet should be directly in front of you; if one is used mainly, that screen goes directly in front and the secondary one beside it at a slight angle. The top edges of both screens should be at the same height.
I raised the screen but now my shoulders get tired; why?
The problem is most likely not the screen but arm support: if the elbows are not supported by the desk or the armrests, the shoulders stay suspended. Review your chair height and the distance to the keyboard; even with the right screen height, seating has to be assessed as a whole.
Do the same rules apply when working on a tablet?
Essentially yes, but a tablet held in the hand or lying flat on a desk tips the head forward even more. For long sessions, propping the tablet upright on a stand and using an external keyboard brings the same relief as the laptop solution, on the same logic.
