One reason you wake refreshed on some mornings and groggy on others, despite sleeping the same length of time, is where in a sleep cycle the moment of waking falls. An alarm going off in the middle of deep sleep can make for a harder waking than one that sounds in a lighter stage. This tool uses the logic of cycles to help you set your alarm near a cycle boundary; it focuses not on the length of sleep but on the point at which it is cut.

Why calculate by cycles rather than by eight hours?
The two approaches are not alternatives to each other: the total length concerns the quantity of sleep, while cycle arithmetic concerns the placing of the moment of waking. The tool aims to bring waking closer to a cycle boundary while preserving an adequate total.
I went to bed at the time calculated and still woke up tired; why?
Your cycle length may differ from the average, you may have taken longer than 15 minutes to fall asleep, or the quality of your sleep may be low for other reasons. Trying a few different bedtimes for a week each and comparing them is a more reliable guide than the result of a single night.
Is cycle arithmetic needed for naps as well?
For short naps the common suggestion is around 20 minutes, so as to wake before entering deep sleep; for those who want a full cycle, roughly 90 minutes is cited. The lengths in between raise the chance of waking from deep sleep and can leave you groggy.
Does the snooze button harm the cycle?
Sleep that begins in snooze intervals is fragmented and shallow, and does little to restore you. Setting the alarm for the hour you will actually get up, and rising in one go, tends to make for a fresher morning than snoozing several times.
Method and formula
The calculation rests on two assumptions: that a sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes on average, and that falling asleep takes about 15 minutes. When you enter your waking time, the tool counts back in blocks of 90 minutes, adds the allowance for falling asleep and lists the bedtimes that correspond to 4, 5 or 6 complete cycles; in the other direction, suitable waking times can be worked out from the hour you go to bed. It should be stated plainly: 90 minutes is an average; the real cycle length varies between people and, in the same person, from night to night, so the results are a reasonable starting point rather than a precise measurement.
How to read the result
Use the suggested times as options to try rather than as strict rules: observing over a few weeks which arrangement leaves you most refreshed is more valuable data than the calculation. Do not lose sight of the total either; for most adults the range of 7–9 hours is the general frame commonly cited, and sleep that falls on cycle boundaries but comes up short is not good sleep. Regularity — going to bed and getting up at similar times every day — is a stronger factor than the cycle arithmetic.
Limits
- The 90-minute cycle is an average; personal cycles can vary between roughly 70 and 110 minutes, and the tool cannot measure yours.
- The 15-minute allowance for falling asleep is an assumption too; the time it takes varies with the day and the person.
- The tool takes no account of the factors that affect sleep quality, such as caffeine, screens, stress and environment.
- In situations such as shift work and sleep disorders, cycle arithmetic on its own does not give a meaningful result.
Safety boundary
Persistent sleeplessness, overwhelming daytime sleepiness, or loud snoring accompanied by pauses in breathing are matters to be addressed by a medical assessment rather than by a calculator. This tool cannot offer guidance in sleep disorders.
