What is energy balance?
Where body weight goes over the long term depends on the relationship between the energy taken in and the energy spent. That relationship is called energy balance; it looks like a simple set of scales, but both pans are in constant motion.

Energy balance is the relationship between the energy taken in from food and the energy the body spends. The expenditure side is not a single item; it is the sum of basal metabolism, digestion, exercise and everyday movement. Because both sides change from day to day, the balance is not a fixed number but an estimated and moving range.
The two pans of the scales
Energy intake is the total calories of everything you eat and drink. Energy expenditure is not one thing but the sum of several items. Over the long term, if intake exceeds expenditure the body tends to store the surplus; if it falls short, the body tends to draw on its stores. The four components of expenditure
- Basal metabolism (BMR): the cost of vital functions, usually 60–70 per cent of the total. Details in the BMR guide.
- The thermic effect of food: digestion and absorption also require energy, roughly 10 per cent, and more for protein than for the other macronutrients.
- Planned exercise: deliberate activity such as the gym, running or swimming.
- Non-exercise movement (NEAT): walking, climbing stairs, housework, fidgeting. This overlooked item can differ by hundreds of calories a day between people.
Why is the balance not fixed?
Energy balance is not an arrangement you set up once and leave; the system responds from within. When intake falls substantially for a long period, the body can trim expenditure a little: everyday movement drops without your noticing, and some functions shift into a saving mode. In the same way, appetite can rise when activity rises. These adaptations are among the main reasons why plans that look right on paper give different results in real life. This does not mean the balance fails; it means the two pans are not independent of each other.
The nature of the numbers: estimated ranges
On the intake side, label figures are averages and portion estimates can be wrong; on the expenditure side, formulas rest on population averages. Trying to manage energy balance to the gram and the calorie is therefore not realistic. The invisible items on the intake side
When people think about energy balance, certain items on the intake side are systematically overlooked, and together they add up to more than expected. Drinks come first: sweetened tea and coffee, fruit juices, fizzy drinks and alcohol can add hundreds of calories to the day while contributing almost nothing to fullness. The second item is cooking oils and sauces: the oil poured into the pan, the dressing drizzled over the salad and the spreads on bread rarely enter the mental account. The third is uncounted eating: tasting from the pot, finishing a child's plate, the biscuit offered by a host. Each is small, the total noticeable. The fourth is the weekend effect: a pattern that runs steadily through the week can be moved somewhere quite different in the weekly average by two days of relaxation. Noticing these items is not about strict counting; it is about looking at the whole picture when you assess the balance. The balance is not a report card
Used as a daily pass-or-fail report card, energy balance turns into an exhausting exercise in number-watching. The body works with the averages of weeks and months rather than daily fluctuations; a single heavy meal or an inactive day does not set the balance. The aim is a pattern that is sustainable over the long term.
