What is TDEE?
The total energy you spend in a day is the sum of what you spend asleep, at work, walking and digesting food. That total is called TDEE, and it is the practical output of all energy calculations.
Short answer
TDEE, total daily energy expenditure, is the sum of basal metabolism, the energy cost of digestion, planned exercise and everyday movement. In practice it is estimated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor of roughly 1.2 to 1.9. The result is not an exact measurement but an estimated range to be corrected by observation.
What does TDEE add up?
Total daily energy expenditure is made up of four items: basal metabolism, the cost of basic vital functions and usually the largest share (details in the BMR guide); the thermic effect spent on digesting and processing food, roughly 10 per cent; planned exercise; and non-exercise movement such as walking, housework and fidgeting. That last item matters more than most people think. Even with no sport at all, the difference between someone working at a desk and someone working on their feet can run to hundreds of calories a day.
The practical calculation: BMR × activity factor
The common way of estimating TDEE is to multiply a calculated BMR by a factor representing your way of life:
- 1.2: desk-based, sedentary life
- 1.375: light activity 1–3 days a week
- 1.55: moderate exercise 3–5 days a week
- 1.725: hard exercise 6–7 days a week
- 1.9: physically very heavy work, or two training sessions a day
An example: for someone with a BMR of 1400 kcal who exercises three days a week, the estimate is 1400 × 1.55 ≈ around 2170 kcal. The factors are approximate too, and most people tend to classify their own activity higher than it is, so if you are unsure between two levels it is usually more realistic to choose the lower one.
How should the result be read?
The number you get is not your body's exact expenditure but an estimate based on the average of people with similar characteristics. Your real value may be noticeably below or above it, and even within the same person there are differences between weekdays and weekends, and between busy and quiet periods. Correcting the estimate through observation
The real value of a TDEE estimate is that it offers a starting point. The process can be set up like this: use the estimate together with a steady routine for a few weeks, watch the general course of your body weight and energy levels over that time, then make small adjustments if needed. Looking at weekly averages rather than daily fluctuations on the scales reduces the noise of temporary effects such as water retention. Common mistakes when using TDEE
Simple as the calculation is, three mistakes recur in its use. The first is counting exercise twice: someone who chooses the 1.55 factor because they train three days a week, and then adds the workout calories reported by a smartwatch on top, has counted the same expenditure twice, since the factor already includes exercise. The second is choosing the factor optimistically: someone working at a desk who takes one or two walks a week usually sees themselves as moderately active, when their real level is generally a step lower. The third is freezing the estimate as though it were a fixed truth: as weight changes, and as the season and workload change, TDEE shifts too, and managing today with a calculation made months ago is misleading. The antidote to all three is the same: set the number cautiously rather than ambitiously, test it against observation, and update it when conditions change. An estimate is a useful tool only inside that cycle.
For whom is a calculation not enough?
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, in growing children and adolescents, in people with a chronic illness and in those with a history of an eating disorder, energy needs fall outside the scope of general formulas; in these situations it is necessary to work with a doctor or dietitian rather than to use calculator results on your own. If number-tracking triggers anxiety or rigid behaviour in you, that too is a sign to discuss with a specialist; energy balance can be managed without counting numbers.

What is the difference between TDEE and BMR?
BMR describes only the baseline expenditure at rest; TDEE is the daily total that adds movement, exercise and the cost of digestion on top of it. TDEE is always larger than BMR.
Should I recalculate my TDEE every day?
No; TDEE already represents the average of daily fluctuations. Updating it when your weight, activity level or way of life changes noticeably is enough.
Does a smartwatch know TDEE better than a formula?
Devices add information because they measure movement, but their calorie estimates still rest on models and can deviate considerably. Formula and device are both estimates, and both should be read as ranges.
Two calculators gave me different TDEE figures; which is right?
Probably both are within the right range; they may be using different BMR equations or different definitions of the activity factors. The difference usually stays within the uncertainty of the estimate.
