Scientific Claim

Not every sentence we hear is a claim, and not every claim is scientific. This lesson shows practical ways to tell a scientific claim apart from other kinds of statements.

Not every sentence is a claim

Compare these three sentences: “A starry night is enchanting”, “I can't sleep well during a full moon” and “The full moon shortens everyone's sleep”. The first is a value judgement; it voices a personal taste and cannot be tested as true or false. The second is a report of personal experience; it tells us about that person's life but proposes no general rule. The third says something general about the world: an assertion that applies to everyone and can be compared against observation. That is what we mean by a “claim”.

This distinction matters, because most arguments arise from putting sentences of different categories on the same scales. Personal experience is valuable, but it cannot by itself prove a general claim; a value judgement is not a matter of evidence at all.

Features of a scientific claim

For a claim to count as scientifically framed, we look for a few features:

  • Clear definitions: the words in the claim have an agreed meaning; “sleep duration” can be measured, while “inner balance” cannot until it is defined.
  • An observable outcome: the claim points to a difference that could be observed in the world.
  • A prediction: the claim does not merely interpret the past; it generates a testable expectation about what comes next.
  • Accepting the possibility of error: whoever makes the claim can say which observation would count against it.

These features are not a badge of superiority but a description of a category. The aim is to know which sentence should be evaluated with which tool.

Three examples from the sky

“The Moon's phases follow a cycle of roughly 29.5 days” is a clearly defined, measurable claim; anyone can check it against a calendar. “The full moon shortens sleep duration” is also framed scientifically: it is testable, but its truth can only be settled by careful measurement — being well framed is not the same as being proven. “Transformational energy is rising this week” is different: what is “transformational energy”, what instrument or observation measures it, and how would we know it has risen? Until the definitions are pinned down, this sentence never becomes a testable claim.

All three examples look at the same sky; yet only the first two allow us to talk about evidence. The difference lies not in the subject itself but in how the sentence is built.

The jargon trap

Words like “energy”, “frequency”, “vibration” and “quantum” have precise, narrow meanings in scientific writing. Their appearance in a text does not make the text scientific — and the reverse holds too: a claim expressed in plain language can be perfectly scientific. The shortcut test is always the same question: what does this statement predict, and how would that prediction be observed? If you cannot get a clear answer, what you are looking at is probably not a claim but a feeling, a metaphor, or a piece of marketing.

An easy way to turn this distinction into a habit is to sort every assertive sentence you meet onto one of three shelves: value judgement, personal experience, testable claim. The sorting takes a few seconds, but it settles from the outset how to engage with each sentence — and ends most unproductive arguments before they begin.

Common mistake: assuming “not scientific” means “worthless”

Being scientific is a category distinction, not a ranking of value. Poetry, art, personal meaning and cultural tradition require no scientific test; their value lives on another plane. The problem arises when an untestable statement is presented with the certainty of tested knowledge. The mirror-image mistake is just as common: assuming any text dressed in scientific vocabulary must be scientific. The remedy for both is the same: place the sentence in its correct category.

Today's small practice

Note down three statements you come across today — a news headline, a social media post and a sentence from a conversation will do. For each, answer two questions in writing: “Does this statement say something testable about the world?” and “If so, which observation would support or weaken it?” One sentence per answer is enough; the aim is to exercise the reflex of sorting categories.
