Blind and Double-Blind Assessment

Our expectations quietly shape what we see and the scores we give — even for the most honest among us. This lesson explains the arrangement science built to switch that influence off: blind and double-blind assessment.

Expectation bends observation

Tasting a coffee you know to be expensive, your mind is primed to find it “more delicious”; the same coffee in an unmarked cup may score quite differently. This is not lying; it is expectation shaping perception and judgement all by itself. The same applies to evaluators: a teacher may give a few extra marks to the paper of a student introduced as “gifted”, and an observer may more easily “see” the expected result in the data. The problem lies not in anyone's honesty but in how the human mind works.

This effect is so well known in research that it has a name of its own: the observer-expectancy effect. The evaluator's expectation can imperceptibly shape the tone of questions, small decisions at the moment of recording, and how ambiguous cases get interpreted.

Blind and double-blind

In blind assessment, the participant does not know which condition they are in: the cups in a taste test are unlabelled, and in a drug trial the participant does not know whether they received the real drug or a placebo. Double-blind assessment adds another layer: the person measuring and scoring the outcome also does not know who is in which condition. With both expectations switched off, any difference that remains must come from the thing being tested — not from anyone's anticipation.

In practice, blinding is built with simple tools: random codes, sealed envelopes, a matching list held by a third person. What matters is not the tool but the principle: who does not know what, and until when?

A double-blind astrology test

This arrangement has been applied to astrology as well. In Shawn Carlson's study, published in the journal Nature in 1985, experienced astrologers were asked to match people's birth charts to those same people's personality test results. Neither the astrologers nor those running the assessment knew whose chart belonged to whom, and the set-up was designed with input from the astrologers so that they would consider it fair. In the end, the matching success did not reach the level the astrologers themselves had set in advance. A single study never has the last word; but this example shows how a double-blind design can test a claim respectfully and fairly: the claim's proponents are given the chance to demonstrate their skill, and only the doors through which expectation could slip are closed. As instructive as the result itself is the way the process was built.

Blinding in daily life

Double-blind design is not confined to laboratories. If you wonder which of two olive oils tastes better, someone close to you can number the cups out of your sight. Covering the author's name while judging a text, or hiding names on job applications, applies the same principle. The principle is simple: hide information that could sway the judgement but is irrelevant to it, until the judgement is made. Nor is blinding a permanent censorship; once the evaluation is complete, the labels are opened and everyone learns what was what. Common mistake: mistaking blinding for distrust

“Why a blind test — don't you trust me?” rests on a misunderstanding. Blinding is a safeguard about method, not about any person; the most experienced and most honest expert is not exempt from expectation effects. Indeed, careful researchers blind themselves when testing their own hypotheses. Accepting a blind set-up is not weakness — it is the mark of genuine confidence in the result.

Today's small practice

Set up a small blind test at home: have someone number samples of two similar products — two teas, two brands of water, two biscuits — out of your sight. Taste them, write down which you prefer, then reveal the labels. If your guess was wrong, don't be disheartened; the real gain is seeing on yourself how much expectation can steer your own palate.
