Uncertainty and Result Ranges

The TDEE you calculated looks like a single number, but it is really a range. This lesson covers the sources of uncertainty in the estimates and builds the habit of reading results as ranges.

Where the uncertainty comes from

Four layers of uncertainty accumulate on the way to your TDEE estimate. First, the formula itself: Mifflin-St Jeor rests on averages and can deviate from an individual's BMR by around ten percent. Second, the factor choice: one step of difference can swing the result by hundreds of kcal. Third, measurement on the intake side: label values carry legal tolerance margins, and portion estimates contain errors. Fourth, daily variation: movement, sleep and even the weather shift expenditure from day to day. These layers stack on top of one another.

The calories-burned figures given by activity wristbands and smartwatches are not exempt from these layers either: devices produce estimates too, and research reports that energy expenditure estimates can deviate considerably.

The single-number illusion

Seeing a crisp number like 1884 on a calculator's screen gives a feeling of precision; but that feeling is misleading. With the four layers of uncertainty stacked up, the honest statement sounds more like: my daily expenditure is most likely somewhere in the 1700-2050 range. This does not make the calculation useless; on the contrary, the range is more useful than the single number, because it protects you from over-interpreting small daily differences. A hundred-calorie difference is a detail that disappears inside that range.

Do not let the width of the range trouble you; this is how the science of estimation works. The weather forecast is not exact either, but it is enough to decide on the umbrella.

Observation corrects the estimate

The formula gives a starting point; real data accumulates over time. Body weight can fluctuate noticeably within a day depending on water, salt and digestion; a single day's reading therefore says almost nothing. The more informative approach is to look at weekly averages and the trend across a few weeks. The trend shows in which direction the formula deviates for you, and lets you correct your estimate gradually. The formula is the map; your own observation is the terrain.

No elaborate system is needed for this observation: a few weekly weigh-ins under the same conditions and a short note are enough. The aim is not to hoard data but to be able to read the formula's direction within a few weeks.

A healthy relationship

This programme's closing message is not a number but an attitude: energy estimates are useful tools for curiosity and awareness, not for anxiety and obsession. A healthy way of using them reads the numbers as ranges, watches the trend, and allows for flexibility. If tracking creates tension, guilt or a strained relationship with food, the right step is to put the tools down and consult a health professional. Range thinking is not unique to calories either: most health-related numbers fluctuate through the day. A healthy relationship with numbers is built by learning to read trends, not single values.

A common mistake

Confusing an estimate with a measurement. The number a calculator produces is not a measurement but an inference based on averages. Measurement happens in a laboratory; in daily life, the best we have is an estimate corrected by observation. Anyone who knows this distinction builds a much healthier relationship with the numbers.
