Should I include warm-up sets in the volume?
Common practice is to count working sets only; warm-up sets inflate the total with their low loads while contributing limited stimulus. Whichever approach you choose, use the same one throughout so that comparisons stay meaningful.
Do I have to increase volume every week?
No. Progress is not linear; planned lighter weeks (deloads) are valuable for recovery. A trend that rises slowly on the scale of months is more sustainable than a number forced upwards every week.
Is volume calculated for cardio training too?
This formula is for resistance training. In endurance activities such as running, volume is usually followed through distance or duration; a running pace calculator is the better fit for tracking pace.
Is it meaningful to compare the volume of two different exercises?
Only to a limited extent. Exercises that work large muscle groups naturally produce higher tonnage. Comparing an exercise with its own history — this month’s squat volume against last month’s — gives a sounder result.
Method and formula
The calculation rests on a definition commonly used in resistance training: volume = sets × reps × weight. A squat of 3 sets of 8 repetitions with 60 kg, for example, produces 60 × 3 × 8 = 1,440 kg of volume. The tool works out the volume of every exercise you enter this way, then adds them up at session level and, if you wish, at week level. In bodyweight exercises, entering zero added load makes the volume appear as zero as well; this is a known limitation of the formula.
How to read the result
The volume figure has no “good” or “bad” value on its own; its meaning appears in comparison. Volume that rises gradually over the weeks is usually the sign of a progressing programme, whereas volume that suddenly doubles can strain recovery. Remember too that the same volume can be reached by different routes: a heavy, low-repetition day and a light, high-repetition day may produce similar tonnage, yet their effects on the body differ.
Limits
- The formula cannot see intensity: 1 repetition with 100 kg and 10 repetitions with 10 kg give the same volume but are not the same session.
- It cannot represent the true load of bodyweight exercises.
- How hard the sets were — how many repetitions were left in reserve — does not show up in the volume figure; an RPE–RIR converter is the complement for that.
- Adding the volumes of different exercises together is a rough summary; a kilogram on the squat does not carry the same meaning as a kilogram on a biceps curl.
Safety boundary
The decision to increase volume should take technique and recovery into account; breaking form for the sake of a bigger number raises the risk of injury. If you have an ongoing pain, consult a health professional before increasing volume.
