I do sport — should I be aiming at the top of the range?

For people who train with resistance regularly, the literature cites values near the upper part of the range; but that is not an automatic rule. The soundest course is to settle on the right point with a sports dietitian, according to your training load and your diet as a whole.

Is it hard to get this much protein from food?

For most people, moderate intakes can be met with an ordinary diet. Higher levels take planning but do not make supplements necessary; the decision to supplement is a separate matter that needs its own assessment.

Is too much protein harmful?

In adults with healthy kidney function there is no strong evidence of harm from intakes within reasonable ranges; even so, the idea that more is always better does not hold. If you feel unsure, consulting a specialist is the most cautious route.

Does the same range apply to plant protein?

In terms of the gram target, yes; but with plant sources, combining different ones through the day to cover the variety of amino acids becomes more important.

Method and formula

The calculation is a single step: your body weight in kilograms is multiplied by coefficients between 0.8 and 2.0, giving an informational daily range in grams. The lower bound of roughly 0.8 g/kg is the level frequently cited for general adequacy in adults, while values near the upper part of the range are associated with regular resistance training and periods of intensive exercise. The tool does not pick a particular number out of that range for you; the choice is left to your lifestyle and, where appropriate, to expert advice.

How to read the result

The width of the range is not a sign of uncertainty but an expression of how much needs genuinely differ from person to person. Someone living a sedentary life and someone training five days a week will not have the same requirement. It is more useful to think of the grams divided across the day’s meals: a daily total of 100 g, for instance, comes to around 30 g per meal when spread across three main meals.

Limits

  • The range is meaningful for healthy adults; it does not apply to children, pregnant women or people with a chronic illness.
  • The calculation knows nothing about body composition; where there is marked excess weight, a figure based on total weight may show the need as higher than it is.
  • The source of the protein and its distribution through the day are not part of the calculation.
  • The upper part of the range is not a target but an upper band cited under particular conditions.
