My speed comes out lower in the test than the figure I was promised; is that normal?
A certain difference is to be expected, especially in tests over Wi-Fi, where walls and distance reduce the speed. If you want to see the real speed of the line, repeat the test a few times at different hours from a device connected to the router by cable.
We all use the internet at the same time at home; how should I work out the speed?
The requirements of uses running at the same time add up: two 1080p streams and one video call create a simultaneous need of roughly 20 Mbps. The tool does this addition for you; the more crowded the household, the more margin you need to leave.
Why is the upload speed so much lower, and does it matter?
Many home packages are weighted towards download, and the upload speed is markedly lower. Sending video on a call, cloud backup and file sharing all depend on upload speed; if you do these often, the upload figure matters at least as much as the download.
Do I need high speed for gaming?
Contrary to what is assumed, online gaming’s bandwidth requirement is low; what matters is latency (ping) and stability. Downloading games, on the other hand, is exactly the task that benefits most from high speed.
Method and formula
The interpretation rests on the approximate bandwidth requirements of common types of use: roughly 5–10 Mbps for a standard video call, about 5–8 Mbps for high-definition (1080p) video streaming, about 25 Mbps for 4K streaming, while online gaming needs little bandwidth but low latency. The tool compares your speed with these thresholds on the assumption of a single device. If several devices are in use at the same time the requirements add up; you assess that total yourself by looking at the values in the result table. The values are approximate; providers’ compression techniques can change the requirements over time.
How to read the result
Keep two distinctions in mind when reading the result. The first is the confusion between Mbps and MB/s: a line of 80 Mbps downloads about 10 MB per second, and download times should be thought through with that conversion. The second is that speed and latency (ping) are different things: the culprit behind stuttering on a video call is usually not speed but latency and the stability of the connection. If your speed is above the thresholds and the problem persists, the places to look are the position of the router, the Wi-Fi channel and the option of a wired connection.
Limits
- The threshold values are approximate; streaming platforms’ requirements change along with compression technology.
- A speed test result measures a moment; real speed fluctuates with the time of day and the load on the network.
- The tool does not interpret latency (ping) or packet loss; for some uses those values are more decisive than speed.
- A test carried out over Wi-Fi shows the speed of your wireless connection at that moment, not of your line.
