The difference between free weights and machines

One side of the gym holds dumbbells and barbells, the other holds seated machines; both do the same job by different routes. The right question is not which is “superior” but which suits what you need today.

Free weights (dumbbells, barbells) ask you to balance the movement yourself; they develop more coordination but take longer to learn. In a movement done with free weights, lifting the load is only part of the job; you also control its direction and balance. It is also observed that strength is specific to the movement tested: strength built on a machine does not transfer one-to-one to the free version, and the reverse holds too. Where machines have particular value

Some situations bring machines to the fore, temporarily or permanently. For people starting training later in life whose confidence in their balance has not yet settled, machines allow strength to be built without the fear of falling; seated movements remove the burden of staying balanced on your feet. A controlled movement path is also valuable when returning to sport after an injury: because the direction and range of the load are limited, the target area can be worked without entering risky angles. The content and timing of such return programmes must, however, be set by a physiotherapist or a doctor; using a machine is not a guarantee in itself.
