RAM

RAM is the very fast, temporary memory holding the data a device is working on at that moment. Its contents are erased when the device is switched off.

The working desk comparison

The easiest way to understand RAM is the desk comparison: if storage is the filing cabinet, RAM is the desk you work at. Opening an application means taking a file out of the cabinet and putting it on the desk; the desk (RAM) is fast because everything on it is within reach. If the desk is small and many jobs are open, you have to keep walking to and from the cabinet — and a device slowing down while applications reload is exactly that.

Impermanence: RAM's defining trait

Everything in RAM is erased when the power goes, which is why it is called temporary memory. That is why an unsaved document is lost in a power cut: until that moment the document lived only in RAM. The "save" command moves data out of RAM into permanent storage. This impermanence is a design choice rather than a flaw; RAM earns its speed by giving up permanence.

How much RAM is enough?

The answer depends on how the device is used. For messaging, browsing and office work, 8 GB is now widely taken as a lower bound; 16 GB gives comfort for heavy browser-tab use, games and visual work; demanding jobs such as video editing may call for more. Watch out for one misconception: adding RAM does not cure every kind of slowness. If the problem is full storage, an old disk or a heavy software load, making the desk bigger will not put the cabinet right.
