Sun Sign
The Sun sign shows which slice of the tropical zodiac the Sun occupied at the moment of birth. It is what newspaper astrology columns mean by your sign, and it is only one component of an astrological chart.

What is its astronomical counterpart?
On the day you were born the Sun stood at a particular point on its yearly circuit along the ecliptic; the Sun sign tells you which of the 12 equal slices that point fell into. In a sense it is an elegant way of naming where your birth date sits within the seasons. Because of precession this slice does not today coincide with the constellation of the same name; on that day the Sun is generally in front of the neighbouring constellation.
The weight it carries in astrology
In astrology the Sun sign is associated with themes such as selfhood, basic motivation and life energy, and it is the best-known element of the chart. Yet astrologers too regard a reading made from the Sun sign alone as a rough summary: within their own system they say that a chart cannot be counted as read without the Moon sign, the rising sign and the planetary aspects. Newspaper horoscopes are for this reason held to be the weakest link even within astrology.
Why do the date ranges vary from source to source?
The days on which the signs change do not fall on the same calendar date every year; the leap-year cycle and the moment of measurement can shift the boundary dates by a day. For those born on a boundary day, which sign applies can only be worked out from the year and the time of birth. This is not a mysterious feature of the system but the ordinary mismatch between the calendar and celestial mechanics.
