RAM and Storage
"My phone is full" and "my phone is slow" concern two different parts: storage and RAM. Through the desk-and-filing-cabinet analogy, this lesson separates the two concepts for good.

The desk and the cabinet
The most durable analogy is this: RAM is your desk, storage is your filing cabinet. To work on a document you take it out of the cabinet and put it on the desk; a big desk lets you work on many documents at once, a small one forces you to keep clearing space. When the work is done, the document goes back into the cabinet. RAM is exactly that: the temporary workspace of currently open apps and tasks. Storage is where your photos, apps and files live permanently. The critical difference: when the device shuts down, the desk is cleared (RAM is wiped) while the cabinet stays put (storage persists).
Which symptom points where?
A "storage almost full" warning, being unable to take photos, install apps or download updates: these say the cabinet — storage — is full. The fix is making space: unused apps, old videos and piled-up downloads get deleted or moved to the cloud. Stuttering when switching between apps, background apps reloading from scratch, slowdown with many tabs open: these say the desk — RAM — is running short. Since RAM usually cannot be added later (on most phones and many laptops), the practical remedy is keeping fewer apps open at once. Telling the two symptom sets apart saves you from wasting time on the wrong fixes.
Reading the numbers
A confusing detail is that both concepts are measured in the same unit: gigabytes (GB). When a phone listing says "8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage", it is stating two different things: the desk is 8 units, the cabinet 256. Storage is always many times larger than RAM, because the cabinet accumulates years while the desk holds only the current work. When choosing a device, judge the two separately: for someone who accumulates photos and videos, storage takes priority; for someone who multitasks heavily with demanding apps, RAM gains weight. Big numbers alone do not mean quality; fit with your own usage does.
There are speed differences between storage types too: the solid-state storage (SSD) common in newer devices is markedly faster than old mechanical disks, and it speeds up everything from booting the computer to copying files. That is why an old computer comes back to life with an SSD: the desk is unchanged, but the cabinet's doors now open and close far faster. It is a detail worth asking about when choosing a device.
Where does the cloud fit?
Cloud storage services can act as an extension of your cabinet: moving photos to the cloud frees space in device storage. But this calls for an early reminder of a warning from the lessons ahead: moving to the cloud and syncing is not, by itself, a backup. We will treat that distinction thoroughly in the synchronisation and backup lessons. For now this is enough: RAM is the temporary workspace, device storage is the permanent local cabinet, and the cloud is an extra cabinet at the far end of the internet.
Common mistake: Blaming fullness for slowness (or vice versa)
The confusion runs both ways: deleting hundreds of photos on a slow device (a cabinet fix for a desk problem), or answering a "storage full" warning by closing apps (a desk fix for a cabinet problem). Both usually fail and produce the frustration of "I tried and it didn't help". Read the symptom first: fullness warnings and saving problems point to storage; switching stutters and reloads point to RAM. One note: when storage gets extremely close to completely full, the system's breathing room shrinks and slowness can appear as well — an exception that does not change the reading rule.
